YOSHI'S NEW ISLAND Company: Nintendo Release: March 14, 2014 ESRB: E (Mild Cartoon Violence) March 15, 2014 I waited in anticipation for this game ever since I heard about it. Was it worth the wait? Except for the lame backstory, which nulls everything that happened in the original Yoshi's Island (turns out the babies were delivered to the wrong parents. Kamek steals Baby Luigi again...) it is for the most part like Yoshi's Island. (Some of the levels in level 1 even have the same stage names.) The levels though are mostly new in design. Yoshi's transformations use the tilt feature, which is annoying. Yoshi pauses a split second before the egg tossing routine begins, which messed me up a few times and takes some getting used to. Other than that, the game is responsive and good play control. The graphics go a step up from the original, but still retain their hand-drawn look. Looks like the guys who made this took a long hard look at Yoshi's Island and wanted to recreate this but using all new levels. They succeeded, and also threw in a few new things, too. Like giant ShyGuys that take more than one button press to swallow, and create huge eggs that break open pipes and walls and grab coins. For lovers of the original Yoshi's Island, this is a must-buy. But even if you don't like Yoshi, it's still a good platformer in its own right. RATING: 8/10
