This Russian guy is in the US, in Yucca Flats for a meeting with top brass at the A-Bomb testing facility. In his briefcase is "secret data on the Russian Moon Job." (sounds dirty, whatever it is!) There are a few agents after him too, but we hardly ever see them. Their orders are to get the briefcase and kill the guy. After a car chase that spans several days (probably not, but the day changes into night and back into day again and again.) Meanwhile, the narrator interrupts with non sequitur-sounding dialogue like "Flag on the moon. How did it get there?"
Gee, what a really great quality sign there. Then this happens:
Oh no, the guy died! Oh wait, no he didn't, he turned into a beast. The Beast apparently likes to kill people just because he can. His first two victims are a man and his wife who stopped on the side of the highway. The Beast likes to strangle people.
A cop passing by finds the strangled guy and goes to get his partner and the chase begins on trying to find out who strangled that guy laying on the side of the road.
narrator: "Joe Dobson, caught in the wheels of progress. Man choked to death, a woman's purse, and footprints on the wasteland." This narrator is about the only voice you'll be hearing. There isn't much dialogue in this movie. "Touch a button, things happen. A scientist becomes a beast." Like this:
Meanwhile, the Beast finds a cave and puts the dead lady inside it. Cop Joe and his partner Jim and are hot on the trail of "a prehistoric beast in a nuclear age." They stumble upon the cave and the dead lady's body. They take it and leave. Then the story starts to drift towards the Radcliffes, a man, wife and two boys. "Nothing bothers some people, not even flying saucers." says the narrator, which doesn't really make sense because there are no UFOs in the movie. There are apparently a whole bunch of rocks to climb.
Jim and Joe decide to go get a plane to reach the top of a plateau. Meanwhile, Hank Radcliffe gets a flat tire and stops on the side of the road. The boys wander off. This is where it gets weird. Jim and Joe mistake Hank for the killer and shoot at him. "North By Northwest," anyone?
Hank gets shot at but doesn't die. He runs back to the car and takes off, leaving Lois just standing there. Meanwhile, the boys find the Beast. Then they see him and run. Into his cave.
The Beast is angry that he missed killing the two boys, who are still in the cave. Then he takes a little nappy poo in the front of the cave and the boys escape. Hank gets some other people to look for the boys. The Beast, angry that they gave him the slip, run after them. Joe and Jim find the beast and shoot him. He falls, but then...
the beast tries to choke Jim, but the Beast finally dies after Joe shoots him. And, of course, after kissing the bunny.
The boys get reunited, and with the Beast dead, we get this:
As a side note, this film is only 53 minutes and 50 seconds long. It was on "Mystery Science Theater 3000", along with two shorts: "Money Talks!" and "Progress Island, USA," a short film about Puerto Rico. And having watched both versions, with and without Crow, Servo and Mike, I like the MST3K version better (but of course!)
