TV Life - part 1.

At a flea market, I picked up 5 issues of a magazine called TV Life. It contained TV listings from the 1950's. Here in part 1, we will look at the earliest one in my collection.

Hey, wait! What year is this? Don't panic, it's 1954.

And it apparently is turning one year old with this issue. And for you youngsters (me included), did you know that KPTV was on channel 27? And, according to themselves, back then it was Oregon's #1 TV station. And there's magic on it. Dave Garroway would later become the first host of "The Today Show" on NBC. So, what was a typical Saturday morning in 1954? Look for yourselves.

Adventures of Blinky? Sounds like a predecessor of Bumpity. But there were no cartoons! Yep, in the '50s, kids had to watch some stupid guy talking for half-hours at a time. Hard to imagine 30 years later in the '80s. Also, the number of TVs in the nation are up to 27,666,000. Could this be the sign of the Devil? Perhaps the Amish are right...

No thanks, I can read them myself. You'll notice that Graham Archer of KGW is Mr. Smiles. I guess KGW was a radio station and didn't have a TV station in 1954. And I wonder how Mr. Smiles reacted when they used that drawing of him.

Film on TV. Sports on TV. You get it all with the new Tele Vision! Notice Nite Owl Theater begins at 11:01 pm. So they did that even back then, too.

Now this is interesting. A TV Service guide. Makes sense being this is TV Listings, but I doubt TV Guide did this. Oh, and be sure to watch Vicki Mills as she sings a whole entire song!

Fine Chinese food for my TV Party? Wow. I guess we still have TV parties, although we now call them "Super Bowl Parties." Just don't hold your TV party on Monday.

If a million monkeys sat on a million typewriters... Fun fact: Of the 7 people in KPTV's film department, only one owns a TV set. I guess the other six aren't part of the 27,666,000. And, don't forget, "All Programs Subject to Change Without Notice!" That's printed a lot in this issue.

KOIN's only ad in this issue. Apparently KPTV was a lot more popular and had more money. I wonder what happened...

The back. Wow! Portland has TWO channels!
